Thought for Today

The occult, harmless fun or satanic deception?

In our present day people look for guidance in horoscopes, ouija boards, call psychic networks and consult spiritists. This practice is nothing new, the Greeks went to Delphi to consult the oracle (self-proclaimed prophet). The Romans seeked signs in the entrails (internal organs) of slaughtered pigs, the people of the middle east consulted mediums (one who claims contact with the spirit of the dead)and in ancient Babylon illict drug use was combined with astrology to discern the future. God's word clearly warns of the dangers of occultic practices.

Do not turn to mediums or seek out spiritists, for you will be defiled by them. I am the Lord your God. Leviticus 19:31

All the counsel you have received has only worn you out! Let your astrologers come forward, those stargazers that make predictions month by month let them save you from what is coming upon you. Surely they are like stubble; the fire will burn them up; they cannot even save themselves from the power of the flame. Isiah 47:13

There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, of an enchanter, or a witch. Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard or a necromancer. For all that do these things are an abomination unto the Lord.

Deuteronomy 18:10-12 (the definition of witchcraft also includes illict drug use)

The occult opens a person up to the confusion and influence of satan, God exhorts us to avoid these practices to protect us and we are to worship Him and seek his guidance in all things. The occult is anything but harmless fun.
